First Trust High Yield Opportunities 2027 Term Fund offers exposure to high-yield fixed-income bonds and senior loans. The fund has delivered respectable total NAV results relative to the high-yield bond space through most periods, with 2022 being a bit of an exception. FTHY continues to trade at an attractive discount and as a term fund that could potentially be realized in the future.

This Fund primarily holds a portfolio of high yield corporate securities. Its yield on price, as well as on NAV are in double digits. The fund is set to terminate in 2027 and we review its prospects in light of that.

First Trust High Yield Opportunities 2027 Term Fund offers exposure to high-yield bonds and floating-rate senior loan investments. The fund's discount has narrowed but remains at an attractive double-digit level. The fund's distribution coverage has decreased, but its large discount provides appeal due to its term structure.

FTHY's discount has moved wider since our last update, potentially opening up an opportunity. I felt that distribution coverage was lacking and that a cut could be possible to the distribution.

The January Effect boosted the valuation of most areas of the closed-end fund market. Taxable bond CEFs have rallied strongly while leaving munis behind. We think this is an opportunity for investors for 2023, as credit spreads are likely to widen, dragging down taxable bond NAVs. We favor munis and high-quality taxables.

FTHY is trading at an attractive discount and looks like a candidate, with the Fed slowing the pace of interest rate increases. These interest rate increases might even be near an end, with the latest 25 basis points expected to be one of the last.

Term funds have a few topics making them different that I hope to clear up with today's overview. Term funds can benefit shareholders as NAV is realized one way or another.

FTHY continues to trade at an attractively deep discount, reaching near its widest discount since it launched. The fund is expected to liquidate in 2027; this should reduce as we get closer though we still have quite a bit of time.

A couple of months ago, FTHY cut their distribution, though it was after raising it fairly substantially last year. The overall market has been mostly down this year, which has been putting pressure on FTHY.
